The Lodge & Gardens
Stone cottages, standing since 1840
Three traditional stone buildings around a courtyard, refurbished to five-star gold standard - and gardens our guests come back for.
The story of the lodge
Built for a farm. Kept for a welcome.
The three stone buildings at Wharton Lodge were built in 1840 and have watched over this corner of Herefordshire ever since. Today they are refurbished to gold award, five-star standard - but the thick stone walls, the courtyard between them and the parkland beyond are exactly as they were.
Quiet, calm and inviting, the cottages are made for couples, friends and small families who want a real holiday-home experience rather than a hotel one. Every interior is individually designed, every bed dressed in Egyptian cotton, and every arrival greeted with fresh flowers and a hamper of provisions.
The lodge is non-smoking throughout, and two of the three cottages welcome a well-behaved dog - because holidays are better with the whole family along.
The gardens & grounds
Yours to wander, morning to dusk
Guests are encouraged to treat the grounds as their own - the walled garden with its two fountains, the furnished glasshouse, and fourteen acres of parkland rolling towards tree-covered hills.
Bring a book, bring binoculars for the birds and dragonflies, or simply bring a bottle for the pergola at sunset.
- The walled garden - benches, tables and two cascading fountains
- The furnished glasshouse, warm even on grey days
- Fourteen acres of parkland, usually with grazing sheep
- A courtyard between the cottages where evenings drift by
- Open gardens, market towns and castles a short drive away
